Kicking off

With the NFL Draft less than a month away, we're well into mock draft season.

The Patriots currently hold the No. 31 pick. The guesswork is a little tougher than it was last year when they had the No. 4 pick, and even harder than two years ago when they sat at No. 3 in obvious need of a quarterback.

There really hasn't been consensus pick for Mike Vrabel's team, or even a position they'll target in that spot.

While the Patriots still have needs on the offensive line, at edge rusher, tight end, and beyond, it's a mystery how they'll attack with the second-to-last pick.

Executive VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf said a few weeks back the board was open. They had done enough in free agency not to have their hand forced, and pick for need.

That was certainly the case last season taking left tackle Will Campbell fourth overall.

Even with what Wolf said, it's tough to believe the Patriots won't hit on an area where they're lacking.

On Tuesday, during the league meetings out in Arizona, we'll get to speak with Mike Vrabel at the coach's breakfast. Maybe he'll drop some clues where the Patriots are headed with the pick.

There's also the possibility of it being used in a deal for A.J. Brown, if the Philadelphia Eagles decide to deal the receiver prior to the expected time frame after June 1.

In any case, we'll find out soon enough.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2011

The news: Jon Morris was at the point of asking out, asking the Patriots Hall of Fame committee to keep his name off the ballot.

Being a finalist three times, and failing three times, wasn't the greatest feeling for arguably the best center in team history.

It also didn't seem fair having Morris, who played during the AFL days in the late 1960s and '70s, go up against modern day players. With fans doing the voting, he didn't have a realistic chance.

And he knew it.

But the Patriots wisely formed a senior selection committee to make sure past players like Morris, a six-time AFL All Star and Pro Bowl center, wouldn't be overlooked.

I remember speaking with Morris not long after he got the call from Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

“To get this phone call now, I’m just overwhelmed by it all,” Morris said, moments after hanging up with Kraft. “It’s so exciting for me, and it comes when you least expect it, which makes it even better.

“Anybody that’s played any kind of sport, whether it’s college or professional, wants to be the best that they can be. This says you were. That’s just a confirmation, an underlying thing that says, ‘Yeah, I did accomplish something’ and it makes me feel great. I was fortunate enough to be selected to the athletic hall of fame at both my high school and my college. So now my pro team finishes that circle, and I’m as proud as I can be of it.”

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

What do you make of the Patriots releasing backup quarterback Josh Dobbs? - Paul C. from Lowell

Guregian: First off, the minute the Patriots re-signed third-stringer Tommy DeVito to a two-year deal worth up to $7.4 million, it seemed the writing was on the wall.

Dobbs had signed a two-year $8 million contract ahead of last season, and was one-part backup, one-part mentor to Drake Maye. He carried a $4.75 million salary cap charge.

So the Patriots have a No. 2 on a cheaper contract. But more than that, DeVito impressed after joining the Patriots last season. He was as good, if not better than Dobbs during practice. So moving on from Dobbs made sense on a couple of fronts.

The Patriots will need a third quarterback who will likely be added after the NFL draft.
