Chicago Tribune Opinion

Monday, March 30, 2026

Good morning.

Where does Route 66 start and end? If you answered Navy Pier, you'd be correct, as of a few days ago. Today, the editorial board looks at the decision by Chicago's tourist attraction to goose business with a cheeky new sign.

Also today, beginning with something going on in Naperville: "A battle has been brewing over, of all things, the basic rules that govern residential and commercial construction, " we write. "And the disputes about these nitty-gritty details are philosophical as much as pragmatic."

You can read more below.

Sunday, the editorial board reaffirmed its support for the "peacekeepers" and its community violence intervention program, even in the face of withering outside criticism. We explain why we think our readers should share our view.

Should Interim Superintendent Maqueline King become the permanent superintendent of the Chicago Public Schools and for how long should her contract last, should she get one? We weigh in that, too.

We also have the second installment in our Chicago 2050 series where distinguished writers imagine the future of our city. Today's contributors are our own Laura Washington and longtime journalist and media entrepreneur Tracy Baim. How do they envision our patch 24 years from now? You can find out below.

We also have great reads from John Shaw on former Chicago Bulls star Steve Kerr, Clarence Page on Bill Mahr and Ald. Bill Conway on Chicago's grim financial condition, alas and alack.

Plus letters from readers on all manner of subjects.

Enjoy your week.

— Chris Jones, editorial page editor
