May 2023. Omaha, Nebraska.
I just left the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting.
Over 40,000 people packed into an arena to hear Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger talk about investing.
It was Charlie’s last shareholder meeting. He passed away six months later.

After the meeting, I got invited to a private dinner.
It was a small group. Maybe 30 people in total.
The host of the event? Tom Gayner.
If you don’t know Tom, he’s basically the Warren Buffett of insurance.
He runs Markel. It’s up over 22,000% since the IPO.
The guy is an absolute legend.
We started talking about investing. About compounding. About finding hidden gems.
Then someone at the table mentioned a company I’d never heard of before.
An insurance company trading at a crazy cheap valuation.
The eyes of everyone at the table lit up when he talked about the stock.
I wrote the name down on a napkin.
The next morning, I started digging.

This company is doing something I’ve only seen once before in insurance.
It’s exactly the same as what Geico did 40 years ago.

Warren Buffett fell in love with Geico because they had a massive competitive advantage.
They sold insurance directly to customers. No agents. No middlemen.

Berkshire bought the entire company. It became one of his best investments ever.
