Happy Birthday, All The President's MenIt remains powerful and relavant: Trump cannot take down our pressThe powerful film All The President’s Men turns 50 this month. It was screened in NYC this day 50 years ago, and released to the public on April 9th The Guardian has a good article about the making of the film. And if you want to read even more, here is a gift piece on the film from the Washington Post. In the Guardian, they focus on a scene with Jane Alexander and Dustin Hoffman, which is brilliant. Alexander, who was nominated for an Oscar for this role, plays a bookkeeper who works for the White House and is coaxed by Hoffman, who plays reporter Carl Berstein, to release bits of information about the illegal activities of Nixon and Attorney General John Mitchell. I was in college when the movie came out, and had been drawing cartoons for years already. The one below was from the early 1970’s during the 1972 election; the Watergate break in happened during Nixon’s reelection campaign that year. I grew up in Washington D.C. and was very politically aware. The Watergate Scandal and the Washington Post’s unfolding reportage on it was amazing and inspiring to watch. It was shocking, tbh. Some people in the Nixon administration had kids in my school. Later when the the movie came out in 1976, we were all excited to see it; it did not dissapoint. Watch it again, or, if you haven’t yet, do me a favor and watch it! It continues to stay relevant. The Watergate Scandal seems innocent now, considering what Trump is doing to our government and attempting to do to our press. He will not succeed. Here are some more cartoons of mine about the news for your enjoyment. A number of years ago, Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, who was played by Robert Redford in the movie, spoke at the White House Correspondant’s Dinner, and I was there as a member of CBS News. I drew a few things he said. |
