There’s something about an Emma Straub novel that feels like slipping into a world you never want to leave—and her latest, American Fantasy, might just be her most joyful escape yet. The New York Times–bestselling author is back with her seventh novel, bringing her signature wit, heart, and sharp observations on family, identity, and growing into yourself—at any age.
Between running beloved Brooklyn bookstore Books Are Magic and raising two kids, Straub somehow found the time to write what she calls her “most fun book yet”—a story that leans into possibility, reinvention, and the kind of magic we could all use right now.
We caught up with Emma to talk about her new book, why readers are craving joy more than ever, and the characters you’re about to become obsessed with.
You’re now seven novels in—what is different about American Fantasy?
This is by far my most fun book—both to read and to write!
How has your writing process changed (or stayed the same) over time?
I have less time now—two kids, two bookstores, etc—so I would say the process is more about battling against all the factors working against me.
How do you think American Fantasy reflects the moment we’re living in right now?
I don't know about you, but I have never needed a joyous escape more than I do right now.
