The Cannes Film Festival is just about a month away, and all of Hollywood has been waiting with bated breath for the lineup to be announced. That’s because the French Riviera film festival is not only jam-packed with glamour and fashion, but has become an increasingly strong launching pad for Oscar contenders. Just two years ago, best-picture winner Anora made its world premiere at the festival, and last year’s lineup included Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, and Sirāt, all of which earned multiple Oscar nominations.
What’s lacking in the lineup so far are big, splashy premieres. Usually, the festival gets at least one major studio movie or something from a notable American director, even out of competition. But we’ve got a ways to go (the festival runs May 12–23), and I’ve heard that the Cannes team is still pushing hard to get a few more big films in the lineup, so I expect several more announcements to trickle out in the weeks to come.
