It is so thrilling that the people of Hungary voted out Viktor Orban, the autocrat who was slowly eroding citizens’ rights in Hungary, the man who was the envy of so many on the radical right around the world. It was such a super majority trounce that Orban conceded quickly, he did not try to claim voter fraud. It’s an incredible victory for democracy, and one that I think bodes well for us and other countries that have been trying to follow Orban’s model of a fake democracy, illiberal democracy. In addition, JD Vance was JUST in Hungary, thinking his presence would make a difference in that election. Nodody likes Vance, not even Hungarians. What arrogance that man has, it’s nauseating. Vance also was tasked at negotiating an end to the war in Iran, and failed at that. This is what needs to happen for us in the midterms this fall. Such a huge victory for Democrats, such that Trump cannot claim anything was rigged; although he will surely try. As journalist Jamelle Bouie of the NY Times says, “Voting works, people. You can vote out these people. Voting is a critical tool in making a better world.” Trump and Pope Leo have been at it. Trump posted this outrageous (and funny to me) AI generated image of himself as a Jesus figure. Pope Leo, the first American-born Pope, is speaking out agains the war in Iran, has bristled at how Trump and Hegseth use the war, claim it a Christian Holy War of some kind. In return, Trump has been going after the pontiff, and Leo had this to say: “I have no fear neither of the Trump administration, nor of speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel.” Asked directly about Trump’s comments on Truth Social, Leo said: “It’s ironic — the name of the site itself. Say no more.” “I will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace, promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to problems. Too many people are suffering in the world today. Too many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to stand up and say there’s a better way.” Heading back East tomorrow after two successful California screenings of Women Laughing. Many of you wrote me about potential screenings in your area, and I will respond soon, thank you for the suggestions. Always welcome. Have a great Monday, stay well and keep up the good fight.
