Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

It is hard to believe we are already in the final stretch of the school year! We have had a fantastic start to the fourth quarter, and the energy throughout our halls is contagious! From celebrating our students to showing our community strength, it’s been a busy and rewarding few weeks.

We kicked off the quarter with our latest round of Den Meetings, where students across grade levels connected, made new friends, and had fun playing Uno together. During these meetings, we were thrilled to announce our quarterly C.A.R.E.S. certificate winners. These students have gone above and beyond in demonstrating our C.A.R.E.S. expectations.

April is a special time as we recognize our military-connected families. It was heartwarming to see a "sea of purple" as we wore purple to show our collective support. Our Military Families Breakfast was a wonderful highlight, allowing us to express our deepest gratitude to those who serve and their resilient children who enrich our school community every day.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to cheer on our teams during our annual volleyball games versus Virginia Run! The sportsmanship and school spirit on display were second to none. We are incredibly proud of our volleyball and basketball players for their hard work and teamwork and our cheerleaders for their support and keeping the energy high!

Events like volleyball and our spring book fair simply wouldn't be possible without your help. To every parent and community member who stepped up to volunteer your time: thank you. Your support ensures our students have access to these enriching experiences and the books they love.

Let’s keep this momentum going as we head toward the end of the year. Thank you for your continued partnership and for making our school such an incredible place to learn and grow.

Calendar Reminders

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled. 

FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage. 

Adjusted Elementary Early Release Wednesdays Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 29, which was previously an early release Wednesday.

Updates to 2026-27 School Year Calendar The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs. View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website. The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026 — has not changed.

Earth Week - April 20-24

Spring is almost here, and that means Earth Week is around the corner! Get2Gree is hosting FCPS Earth Week April 20-24, 2026. The themes for Earth Week Are:

• Monday, April 20: wear nature print for Wildlife Day
• Tuesday, April 21: wear white for Zero Waste Day
• Wednesday, April 22: wear green for Earth Day
• Thursday, April 23: wear red for Climate Change Day
• Friday, April 24: wear blue for Watershed Day

Earth Day Clean-up

Cub Run’s second annual Earth Day Clean-up is next Wednesday, April 22 at 3:30pm. Please join us to beautify our school grounds, paint rocks, and enjoy pizza!

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of VA, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.

In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations: 

• Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older; 
• Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older;  
• A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. 

• After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Immunization appointments are available. Inspire Health Alliance will be providing immunizations for currently enrolled FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Visit the Inspire Immunization Events Student Registration webpage to schedule an appointment.

Staff Appreciation Week!

We are looking for donations and a few volunteers to help celebrate all our teachers and staff that support our Cubbies throughout the school year. If you are able to donate any of the following items, please sign up below. 

You can drop them off at the school front office (please label them "PTA") or have them delivered using our Amazon Donation Wishlist.

Family Input Form for 2026-27 Class Placement

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead and planning for the 2026 -27 school year. We want to share some insight into our student placement process to ensure transparency and clarity for all families. Our goal is to create balanced, heterogeneous learning environments. To achieve this, we consider numerous criteria and several key factors, which include, a mix of performance levels and learning abilities, balance the distribution of girls and boys, and grouping students to ensure our resource teachers can provide maximum support. Placement decisions are a collaborative, intentional, and thoughtful effort involving current teachers, counselors, and specialists to set up our Cubbies for success.

To maintain a fair and effective learning environment, we do not honor requests for specific teachers. We prioritize instructional needs and individual student strengths above all else. Additionally, staffing assignments can change over the summer due to enrollment fluctuations. To avoid confusion or disappointment, staff members are instructed not to share placement information until the end of summer when rosters are finalized.

While we cannot accept specific teacher requests, we highly value your perspective on your child’s learning style and needs. If there is essential information you would like us to consider, please let us know by completing this family input form by May 15, 2026.

Your feedback, combined with our professional staff’s recommendations, helps us create the best possible environment for your child’s success. Thank you for your partnership!

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average. 

As of April 15, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has decreased to 10.4%, being in the yellow zone. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower. 

Did you know? Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Consistent attendance helps students build confidence, maintain friendships, and stay on track with their lessons.

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means treating everyone with respect and recognizing that all people have value. It also means being open-minded and fair in how we approach situations.

By teaching fairness, we help students develop into responsible, trustworthy, and kind individuals who care about others. Fairness builds the foundation for strong friendships and a positive community.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
