Kicking off

Patriots personnel chief Eliot Wolf held his pre-draft press conference on Monday.

Did he drop any clues as to the Patriots thinking in the upcoming NFL Draft?

Maybe.

It sure sounded like the trenches would be the focus early in the draft.

Wolf said he thought it was a "pretty strong draft" on the offensive and defensive lines.

If that plays out, it's a good place for them to start.

Offensive tackle and defensive end are two of the team's top priorities. Defensive tackle can also be lumped in after losing Khyiris Tonga.

Specifically, when talking about an edge rusher, Wolf may have dropped another clue.

"We could complement our room with some speed. I think that's evident," Wolf said. "Dre’Mont, Harold [Landry III], Elijah [Ponder] and some of the other guys we have, they all have their skill sets.

"We would like to get faster. Dre’Mont’s a guy that can play across the line, run games. I mean, he can sneaky beat you with speed, but that's probably not his bread and butter. So, that's an area that we're looking to try to improve the depth on the roster."

So speed rules.

Some of the faster edge rushers in Round 1, 2 or 3?

UCF's Malachi Lawrence, Texas A & M's Cassius Howell, Oklahoma's R Mason Thomas, and Texas Tech's Romello Height.

Lawrence ran a 4.52 40-yard dash, with a sizzling 1.59-second 10-yard split. Only Ohio State's Arvell Reese and Howell had faster splits.

It'll be interesting to see if the Patriots hold true and go with one of the above.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2018

The news: There was quite a bit of talk about Rob Gronkowski, his contract and status with the Patriots during this time eight years ago.

With two years left on his existing deal, Gronkowski was underpaid, unhappy with Bill Belichick, and for the first time, opted against participating in the Patriots offseason program.

Belichick had attempted to trade his All-World tight end - there was a deal with the Detroit Lions in place - but Gronkowski threatened to retire if the swap happened.

The situation was front burner news.

Gronkowski met with Belichick on April 24, and after skipping OTAs, returned for mandatory mini-camp. He was part of the Patriots 2018 championship team, and announced his retirement - from the Patriots - in 2019.

The tight end returned to play with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, won another ring, before retiring in earnest in 2022.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

On draft night, how much value do you think the Pats first round 31st pick will have from a trade standpoint on the night of the draft? Lucas from Newton

Guregian: The best-case scenario for that happening is if a team wants to move up for a quarterback. Or if an elite player unexpectedly falls.

But if I'm the Patriots, and an elite players drops, especially at a position of need, I'm making the pick. This draft isn't loaded with difference-making talent. So I'd pounce.

Outside of that, if a team is willing to surrender a second round pick to move up for a quarterback, the most likely being Alabama's Ty Simpson, I'd certainly consider it.
