National Library Week is April 20 - 24

April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. Thank you Ms. Ergler!

School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.

Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation of your school librarian! Be sure to visit the brand new Kingstowne Regional Library open now at 7130 Silver Lake Blvd. in the new Franconia Governmental Center.

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update!

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a state-wide special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 29, which was previously an early release Wednesday at Hayfield Elementary.

HES Get2Green Team Update

By Hailey Wright, Get2Green Member

Get2Green is an environmental stewardship program that encourages students of all ages to reuse, reduce, and recycle. It teaches the future generations to keep our earth clean and protected. The HES Green Team, made up of 5th and 6th graders, coordinates and manages our school-wide recycling program. In addition to standard recycling, we collect used school supplies to donate to Staples and snack wrappers to recycle through an organization called Terracycle.

Our other initiatives include:

  • Building greenhouses out of milk cartons to demonstrate both reusing items for a useful cause and experimenting on which carton works best. This activity included active  learning, experimenting and implementing useful and easy ways to reuse.
  • Creating posters to display around the interior of Hayfield. This develops skills like slide building, creative capabilities, and researching abilities. The posters also inform all students about what we, the Green Team, do and how they can help.
  • Structured cleanups have provided opportunities to clean our school grounds as well as learn good habits that teach us to clean up after ourselves and to not litter.

Parent/Guardian Input Form

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (Optional) for Current K-5 Students or New Students for Next Year – Due Friday, May 8

As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, Hayfield Elementary staff will be creating tentative class groupings this spring. Final classroom assignments will be shared in mid-August.

In developing class placements, we carefully consider a variety of factors, including:

  • Individual student information
  • Teacher input
  • Social relationships
  • A balanced mix of students with diverse needs, personalities, and learning styles

Due to the many variables involved in building well-balanced classrooms—including staffing considerations—we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers.

If there is information you would like us to consider regarding your child’s placement, please complete this form by Friday, May 8, at 4:00 PM. If you do not have additional input to share, there is no need to complete the form. https://forms.gle/JEaerGrBDU5vGxGj6.

Note: To keep the process organized, this form is the only way to submit parent input, as we cannot accept individual emails regarding class placement.

Our goal is to create supportive, well-rounded classroom communities where all students can thrive.

Best,
Dr. Tempel-Milner and Mr. O’Connor
