Music: Not Impossible Assembly with students from the Woodson Orchestra!
Dear Canterbury Woods Families,
This week was a busy and memorable one at Canterbury Woods! On Tuesday, we were proud to celebrate our talented student artists at the Woodson Pyramid Art Show, where selected students from across the pyramid had the opportunity to display their incredible artwork. It was wonderful to see their creativity and hard work on display for our community.
Wednesday began with a special breakfast honoring our military families as we celebrated Purple Up! Day. We are grateful for the service and sacrifices of our military connected families and appreciated the chance to recognize them. Our All County Chorus students shared their talents by learning and performing all of the service songs, which was a meaningful and enjoyable treat for everyone in attendance.
We also hosted a truly special assembly for students in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing program: Music: Not Impossible, coordinated by the orchestra teacher, Ms. Wilcox from Woodson High School and led by students from Woodson. Music: Not Impossible is an immersive sensory experience created to make live music more inclusive for the Deaf and hard of hearing community through wearable haptic technology. Students wore special vests that translated music into vibrations they could feel throughout their bodies, allowing them to experience rhythm, movement, and emotion in a new way. It was an incredible experience for our students! We were also honored to welcome Dr. Michelle Reid, who participated in the event alongside our students.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this week so meaningful for our students and families. We hope to see you tonight at Movie Night!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

No School April 21/Meals for Students
April Statewide Election: No School for Students
There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.
FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage.
Adjusted Elementary Early Release Wednesdays
Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.
This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.
SOL Support
Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

FY 2027 Budget: Sustaining Excellence
Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget
About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. This includes public budget hearings (April 14-16) and an online survey. Learn how the FCPS budget helps us sustain our excellence.
CWES will use Schoology for all Tuesday Folder contents. All flyers are posted to Schoology Course: Canterbury Woods Elementary School All Parents/Guardians and contents are listed below.

Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration from HR.
