Purple Up!

Purple Up Meetups

Keene Mill celebrated our military connected students on Monday with meetings for the students to share their experiences with each other.  Students talked about their unique set of challenges: frequent moves, starting over at new schools, and saying "see you later" to many along the way. Yet, through it all, they develop an incredible ability to adapt, a global perspective, and a strength of character that is truly inspiring.

The dandelion is the official flower representing military children. The dandelion is hardy, puts down roots quickly, survives in almost any climate, and blooms where it is planted. This week, we honor our "dandelions" for their resilience, their adaptability, and the unique perspective they bring to our classrooms.

Whether your family is military-connected or not, the resilience we celebrate this month is something we can all aspire to. Our school is a stronger, more vibrant place because of the diverse experiences our students bring to the classroom.

Twin Day

Twins/Multiples Day

Dress like a friend or two on Friday, April 24.

Spring Standardized Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where students are in their learning.

This list of assessments for each grade level provides the spring timeframe for required tests. Each school sets specific testing dates and communicates schedules to students and families. Please review school newsletters and emails carefully for this information.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and that the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible. Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Now Available

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, we will share copies with you directly.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
