At last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and this year’s Sundance Film Festival, I caught Charli xcx in no less than five(!) movies. These appearances ranged from little more than a cameo to starring in a meta-mockumentary about the Brat craze. (We’ve already covered The Moment.) But the best of the bunch, at least as it relates to showing off the musician’s acting chops, is Pete Ohs’ Erupcja, opening in limited theatrical release this weekend. Charli plays an impulsive and emotionally avoidant Brit who visits Warsaw with a new boyfriend and reunites with an old friend, played by Lena Góra. I dug the lived-in performances, immersive city wandering, and a hazy cool that emanates from this depiction of a destabilizing friendship. It’s one of those loose, lo-fi films that’s heavy on vibes while packing just the right amount of emotional punch at the end. – Aisha Harris
If you’re looking for a cozy, low-stakes reality show, check out the Japanese Netflix series The Boyfriend. A group of queer men live together, work together, and date each other. The production values are quite different from American reality dating shows — it’s a much chiller vibe, but there’s certainly a lot of drama. (Yes, it's similar to the cult series Terrace House.) And each episode is punctuated by a group of commentators who offer their thoughts about what's happening, which will help you make sense of what’s unfolding on screen. It had my group chat enraptured for weeks. Season 2 wrapped earlier this spring. – Showrunner Jessica Reedy |
