Thoreau Matters: April 17, 2026

Dear Thoreau Families,

We have had such a wonderful and busy week at Thoreau!

On Monday, all of our 8th grade students attended activities fairs at the high school they will attend next year (Madison, Oakton and Marshall HS). This was a great opportunity to tour the buildings and learn about clubs and activities at the high school level to ease the transition.

On Wednesday, we were proud to celebrate Purple Up! Day in recognition of our military-connected students. We hosted a breakfast to honor their resilience, flexibility, and the unique experiences they bring to our school community. Purple Up! Day is part of the Month of the Military Child, and the color purple represents all branches of the military. As an aspiring Purple Star School, we are committed to supporting and recognizing our military families, and this was a meaningful opportunity to do just that. We are grateful to our Student Services team who helped make the morning so special for our students.

Also on Wednesday, we hosted the first Madison Pyramid Day of Service! Our students showed incredible dedication by completing 16 different projects ranging from writing letters to troops and baking cookies for local shelters to assembling hygiene kits, courtyard cleanups and creating alphabet flashcards for literacy promotion for preschoolers. The impact of their hard work was deeply felt, as one student shared: "It made me feel like I was making a difference in someone else's life. I feel as though the deeds I completed today will bring happiness and a smile to another person. I would love to do something like this again. I believe that it is such a privilege to do kind things like this for others." I cannot thank our community enough for all of the donated items and we are already making plans for our next Pyramid-wide service day next school year! A photo montage is being created but I have included a few pictures below.

As a reminder, there will be no school for students on Tuesday due to the election.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Oakton HS Cheerleading Program

Calling all rising 9th graders!  Are you interested in trying out for Oakton Cheer? If so, please have your child fill out the online interest form to be added to our email list. Our email list will receive important information throughout the spring and summer about the upcoming season.

You do not need to have any experience to join cheer, just a great attitude and willingness to learn!   We are projecting 3 teams next season: Freshman, JV and Varsity.  Tryouts are Aug 3-5, and the season goes to typically mid-November, with F/JV ending in late October.  All teams will cheer at football games and JV/Varsity teams will perform a routine.

We look forward to meeting everyone soon! If you have any questions, please email Coach Melendez:  kvmelendez@fcps.edu
