Dear Travel Fan,

The World Cup soccer tournament is expected to be one of the biggest events of 2026 in the United States, but how many international travelers will come is an open question. This week, with the first kickoff less than 60 days away, we take stock.

Spring is a beautiful time of year in Santa Cruz, Calif., and our 36 Hours column visits the laid-back beach town, where you’ll find renowned wineries, towering redwood forests, pristine beaches, great surfing and excellent organic restaurants.

On the news and advice front, if you’re interested in visiting New Zealand but are daunted by the long flight, Air New Zealand is introducing the Skynest, a set of bunk beds you can reserve for four hours of in-flight nap time. If you’re traveling with a baby or a young child, we tell you what to pack, what to rent or buy at your destination and what to leave at home. And our Tripped Up column tackles the case of a 90-year-old airline passenger who was given a ride to the boarding gate, and delivered to the wrong spot, a fact he didn’t learn until it was too late for him to make his flight. He spent two nights in a hotel waiting for his rescheduled trip. Who should pay?

It’s tulip season in Amsterdam and we’ve put together a comprehensive guide for visiting the city, with the essential sites, best places to eat and suggestions if you want to explore more deeply. We’ve also got a guide to following Prince’s trail through Minneapolis. This is the 10th anniversary of his death, but his footprint in his hometown remains big.

Finally, Cape Town, South Africa, is home to one of the world’s great botanical gardens, Kirstenbosch. There, and at other green spaces nearby, new leaders drawn from the country’s Black and Colored communities are having an impact. We take a tour.

Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Amy Virshup
