Today, King Charles joined the rest of the royal family in honoring his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 100th birthday. Speaking from Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022, Charles described his “darling mama” as “constant, steadfast, and wholly devoted to the people she served.” While the royal diary was filled with tributes, engagements, and a reception in honor of the longest-reigning monarch in British history, photographer Chris Levine commemorated the centennial by releasing never-before-seen images of the late queen to Vanity Fair. In an interview with Gustavo Egusquiza, Levine revealed his process behind creating the photographs, reflecting on how “magic happened between” the photographer and the subject. “Despite the many differences in her circumstances and life experience from most of us, in fact, from virtually all of us, she was a woman, a human being, and in many ways she was just like the rest of us. There was a very approachable and simple side to her,” he said.
