Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Community,

Prom this past Saturday night was a resounding success! It was a night of splendor, sparkle, and grand celebration. It was wonderful to see our students decked out in their finest formalwear, dancing the night away. A huge shout-out goes to our senior class sponsor, Michelle Tibbs, our senior class advisor, Kelly O’Connell, the Senior Class Council, Hiroko Rose, Diya Anthony, Suah Choi, Hannah Lunsford, Bella Nguyen, Annette Tennant, Abby Ward, and Juniors Emma Alemanji, Thomas Syron, Melissa Gutierrez, Leah Madison, Julia Seeber, Maya Lawrence, Addie Raymond, Bella Osborn, Laila Sharm for their tremendous hard work in hosting yet another unforgettable prom.

This past week, we also held our Senior Art Show, which showcased the incredible range of talent and growth of our senior artists. It was a privilege to see their journey through the display of their earlier works alongside their more mature, recent pieces. In speaking with the artists, I was deeply impressed by the intentionality behind every aspect of their work. Whether they continue in artistic endeavors or transfer these skills to other fields, we know they have bright futures ahead.

We continue to celebrate our senior athletes as well! This past week, we honored our Boys Lacrosse, Girls Tennis, and Crew seniors. Congratulations to all of you, and thank you for your lasting contributions to the Cavalier Legacy. Additionally, if you haven’t seen it yet, please check out the WUSA 9 News coverage of our Model Congress sessions. I am so proud of our students and incredibly thankful to our Government teachers for their hard work in the design and execution of this amazing learning experience.

A big thank you to our Leadership students, who hosted a wonderful event to thank our team captains and club officers. They put on quite the spread to show their appreciation; thank you all for your leadership and everything you do for our school. We also celebrated our Administrative Professionals last week, and I want to thank them again for keeping our school running smoothly, creatively, and in good spirits every single day.

This week is our Stress Less Spirit Week. We got it started with pajama day, perfect for an after Prom Monday. Here is the schedule for the rest of the week:

Tuesday: Favorite Color Day

Wednesday: Jersey Day - Rep your favorite team

Thursday: Vacation Day - Dress like a tourist

Friday: Wear Green

For a full list of all our activities, please continue to check woodsonsports.com. We also hope to see you for the opening week of our spring musical, Sweeney Todd. This production is challenging on every theatrical front, and we are excited to see our talented cast and crew rise to the occasion. Opening night is May 1 at 7:00 PM, with additional shows on Saturday at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Get your tickets here.

Have a great week!

Student Services Information

Counselor Corner

We want to remind students that they have plenty of time to positively impact their grades or increase their academic momentum. Use the Academic Support padlet for content help and SOL released tests. We have tips on how to guard against procrastination and how to manage test anxiety.

AP testing begins May 4 and runs through May 15. Late testing for those who are approved runs the week of May 18. Families were sent instructional information last week and students received information from their teachers this week. The Woodson AP page has the testing schedule and other helpful information.

Additionally, students who plan to take a summer course should click here to register before classes fill up and close (specifically HPE and SD-Econ). FCPS allows any student to repeat one failed class through credit recovery. Registration is now open!

We hosted a successful field trip to the NOVA Annandale campus. As seniors look forward to their next chapter, NOVA is a great place to begin their journey. Students can look at transferrable degrees (Associate’s degree/AS..) if they intend to transfer to a university. Others who plan to secure training and enter the workforce may look at their career prep program (Associate of Applied Science/A.A.S.). We will host our last NOVA support session for seniors tomorrow, April 28 during Returns in the Career Center. Walk-ins are welcomed. There is a NOVA column on our College padlet which has an application guide and other helpful resources.

AP Testing

AP Testing season is upon us!  In a few short weeks students in AP classes will begin taking their AP exam for potential college credit.  Please take a minute to review the AP exam schedule to ensure you and your child know when they have an AP exam. In addition to the review your child’s teacher is doing in the classroom, FCPS is offering virtual review sessions through Schoology.  Directions and offerings can be found here (our own Mrs. Wright and Mr. Pugh are running two of them).   AP Classroom also has daily videos to help students review and prepare for test day. Here are some thing s to know for test day :

  • If it is a morning exam, students must be in the cafeteria by 7:30 AM. Please make sure they have enough time to get through security by 7:30 AM
  • If it is an afternoon exam, please make sure students have a ride home, the exams run approximately 3-4 hours, a ride home via the bus is not guaranteed. The meeting location for the afternoon sessions will be communicated to the student closer to the date of the exam.
  • Students must bring a fully charged laptop, charger, #2 pencils, and calculator.
  • Students cannot bring phones, smartwatch, tablet, fitness tracker, recording device, camera, backpack, notes, or any electronics that could connect to the internet. Students observed with any of these devices out or have on their person during an exam or a scheduled break will be dismissed from the exam
  • Students must be on time for the exam. Once an exam has begun, no student will be allowed to enter the exam room and College Board will not grant requests for late testing.

More specific information will be coming home with your students as we get closer to the exam date. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mrs. Todd, Advanced Academic Coordinator.  phtodd@fcps.edu

______________________________________________________________

Across Virginia this spring, high school students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) tests.  An FCPS Frequently Asked Questions webpage (SOL High School Assessment Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)) provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Students may be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 20 and May 20. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify Woodson’s Assessment Coach, Kathleen Crosson, as soon as possible.

SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.
