Fire breaks out at abandoned mill in Haverhill

Firefighters were working overnight at an abandoned mill in Haverhill, Massachusetts, where a fire broke out and involved much of the vacant building.

The mill building is in the area of Winter Street and Stevens Street, just west of Haverhill’s downtown neighborhood.

Haverhill Fire Chief Chris Cesati said that the building was “pretty well involved” when crews arrived on scene, and several other communities provided aid, including Georgetown, Groveland, Lawrence and Methuen.

Elementary school in Concord closed Tuesday after fire

An elementary school in Concord, Massachusetts, will be closed on Tuesday after a fire broke out on Monday night.

First responders were called to Thoreau Elementary School on Prairie Street at around 9:15 p.m. Monday night, after getting a report of an activated fire alarm and sprinklers, according to Fire Chief Brian Whitney and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laurie Hunter.

Firefighters and police got to the school and noticed the smell of smoke from outside. Two custodians told them the inside of the school was smoky and hazy.

Slightly cooler Tuesday as New England braces for a soaking on the way

If you liked yesterday, today is just as bright — but just a smidge cooler.

Sea breezes will get to us early along the coast, capping our high temperature in the 50s. Elsewhere, strong sunshine should again boost us into the 60s. A few clouds move in by afternoon.

Any early sun Wednesday should be gobbled up by clouds as winds freshen from the southeast. These will eventually bring in showers in Eastern Mass as the rain also advances from the west. This is like a rainy squeeze play that will eventually soak us down by Wednesday night and early Thursday.

Live updates: U.S. appears cold to Iranian proposal to end the war without a nuclear deal

The Trump administration seemed unlikely Tuesday to accept Iran’s offer to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. lifts its blockade on the country.

The proposal would postpone discussions on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, something that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to rule out in a Fox News interview Monday.

“We have to ensure that any deal that is made, any agreement that is made, is one that definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point,” he said of the proposal, which was delivered to the U.S. by Pakistan.

Patriots draft grades roundup: 2026 class receives mostly solid reviews

After owning a top-five pick in the last two NFL Drafts, the New England Patriots entered the 2026 NFL Draft in a much different position, selecting 31st in the first round and near the bottom of most rounds throughout the weekend.

They were also notably understaffed on Day 3, as head coach Mike Vrabel was away from the team Saturday as he seeks counseling.

But those factors didn’t stop the Patriots from having a busy draft weekend.

It’s “DeRATification Week” in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Usually, residents are trying to get their city leaders laser-focused on solving rat infestations. This week, city leaders are flipping the script, aiming to get residents more locked in on rats.

Officials are putting on a show-and-tell on controlling the rat population.
