Independents’ Day
This year’s Indie Bookstore Day was a
rousing success for booksellers across the country, who celebrated with events, promotions, and giveaways that drew customers eager to support local businesses. Some 600 Hachette Book Group workers
are moving to unionize with Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild-CWA Local 32035, having requested voluntary recognition from the publisher on Monday. Plus, the first-ever Children’s Booker Prize for fiction will be awarded early next year—and, in the meantime, is
looking for young readers to serve as jurors. In other news, Utah has
added two more titles to its statewide list of banned books, bringing the total to 34, reports the
Salt Lake Tribune. Rebecca Yarros has
announced her next book, a “castaway romance” set for this fall, via
Today. For the
Los Angeles Times, Maddie Connors argues that our shrinking attention spans are
changing the way novels are written. In a
Lit Hub excerpt from her new book
Middlemen, Laura B. McGrath shines a light on the
literary agent who invented the book auction. And Australian novelist
David Malouf has died at 92.

Hachette Employees Seek to UnionizePending recognition from the publisher, the Hachette Workers Coalition, which has signed around 600 employees to join Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild-CWA Local 32035, would be the largest trade publishing union to date.
