Answering your questions This week brought royalty to the U.S., with a visit from the United Kingdom’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla tied to the America 250 celebration. It also sparked this question from one of our readers: - Why are they called King Charles and Queen Camilla, while his mother was Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip. Why was he not King Philip?
I, too, had wondered why Philip’s title had never changed. Fortunately, I have some colleagues who have dived into this over the years. When Philip died in 2021 at 99, my colleague Monica Hesse explained it like this: … because of a long-standing tradition within the British monarchy. “King” was typically reserved for active monarchs. “Queen,” however, could simply be a symbolic, wifely role. If Philip had been called “king consort,” then people might assume he outranked his wife. “Prince” was a way of signaling that she was the one in charge. | | | | Which brings us to Camilla’s title. When she and Charles married in 2005 — Charles’s second marriage — it was declared that she would be known as princess consort. When Elizabeth died in 2022, Camilla was given the title of queen consort — per the wishes of the late queen. But when her husband was crowned that May, she was too, and given the title Queen Camilla. So tradition goes a long way in the monarchy. But, given the nature of that dynamic, a monarch can change the rules — unwritten or otherwise — with a simple declaration. What else to know Thanks for your great questions. Now, keep ’em coming.
