Even Republicans admit that they don’t have much of a strategy for the midterm elections. Donald Trump and his party are responsible for a hugely unpopular war abroad that is driving up grocery and petrol prices at home—so they don’t have a lot to work with. Their plan seems to involve bullying state lawmakers into redrawing maps more favourable to Republicans while going after incumbents whom the president dislikes.
In somewhat related news, every day the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, nearly 14m barrels of oil—14% of global output—are lost. Yet markets remain oddly calm. The price of Brent crude is still far below the panicked predictions made at the start of the war. Why? More exports from elsewhere, combined with falling imports, have created a surprising mini-glut. But the world’s energy reckoning has merely been deferred, not dodged. |
