Age won’t keep this Veteran from his love of art

Felix

Feliciano “Felix” Fortuna, who will turn 102 years old in June, was recognized for his service with a Centenarian Coin from the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, May 7.

Felix

Deputy Medical Center Director Michael Welsh presented the coin to Felix during the 2026 Creative Arts Festival, where his artwork was being displayed alongside the art of his Veteran brothers and sisters.

Felix is an artist, storyteller, and a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, where he served for 21 years as a Lithographer. When Felix gets to telling a story, everyone around hears it. He has an excitement that is contagious and an energy that people half his age wish they had.

His years as a Navy Lithographer were just as exciting, and they make for great stories. Just as good as his stories are his artwork. From portraits of U.S. Presidents to Navy warships, and even a few paintings of his family (including his daughter when she was a small girl), everyone who sees his art knows that Felix is a man with a gift.

Infusion Department and Hematology/Oncology (Hem/Onc) Clinic is temporarily relocated

onc

The Infusion Department and Hematology/Oncology (Hem/Onc) Clinic has temporarily relocated from the Internal Medicine Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) to Unit 4B on the fourth floor of the main hospital. This move supports upcoming construction efforts and is part of a planned expansion of the Infusion Department to increase capacity, improve patient flow, and enhance the overall care experience for Veterans.

During this transition, you will continue to receive the same high‑quality, compassionate care from the clinical teams you know and trust in the new 4B location. All services will remain fully available throughout the construction period.

If you park in the parking garage and need ambulatory assistance, such as a wheelchair or walker, please check in at the front desk. Staff will be available to help you get to the new location on 4B.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to create a more efficient and comfortable environment for your infusion and oncology care.

Be Physically Active

active

Being active is safe for almost everyone, and its health benefits far outweigh the risks. If you have symptoms such as chest pain or pressure, dizziness, or joint pain, or are concerned about a chronic condition, talk to your health care team before increasing activity.

Physical activity is anything that gets the body moving. It can be moderate intensity, meaning that you can talk while being active, or it can be vigorous intensity, meaning that you cannot say more than a few words without taking a breath. Choose activities that you enjoy and start at a comfortable level. Once the activity feels easier, try being active for a longer amount of time, or more often, or a combination of both.

Understanding connection: Veteran homelessness and mental health

homelessness

Why housing stability is essential to mental health treatment and recovery for Veterans experiencing homelessness.

For some Veterans, mental health challenges may contribute to housing instability. For others, the stress, trauma and uncertainty associated with homelessness can worsen existing mental health challenges. In both instances, mental health struggles don’t exist on their own, they overlap with and can intensify nearly every other challenge a Veteran faces, and without stable housing, even the most effective mental health treatments can be difficult to sustain. However, when Veterans have access to stable housing alongside comprehensive mental healthcare and treatment, recovery becomes possible.

Easier access to commercial driver’s license training for Veterans

truck

VA has implemented a key part of the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, commonly referred to as the “Dole Act,” improving how certain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training programs are approved for VA education benefits.

Veterans have been able to use their G.I. Bill benefits for CDL training since the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill became law in 2009. Now, the Dole Act is making it easier for Veterans to access these programs by streamlining the approval process.
