Essence of Kamchatka

Kesshav Vikram’s image, featured in this year’s exhibition, captures the raw spirit of the remote wilderness of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

After days of waiting, the moment finally came together. As a brown bear ambled along the shoreline of Kurile Lake and the Iliinsky volcano appeared from the drifting clouds, Kesshav knew it was now or never. It was a fleeting convergence of patience, light and landscape.

Bears are generally solitary animals, but this one was making its way to a seasonal gathering, drawn by the sockeye salmon returning upriver to spawn in the lake where they were born.
