| Adapted from an online discussion. Hi, Carolyn: My best friend and roommate is the sweetest, gentlest guy alive. However, he’s also the most timid. This would be fine if he weren’t upset by what that means. I’ve spent 10,000 hours talking to him about how he’s bored with his work, it’s not interesting or a challenge, he feels complacent. Same goes for dating. What frustrates me is that my friend won’t be brave. He won’t make any moves — won’t look for a new job or try a new project, try online dating or go out to meet people. I find my patience waning a bit. It’s hard to listen to someone dissatisfied with their life who won’t do the (scary) things required to change it. I’m not sure how to say this — gently — in a way that could be useful. — Losing Patience |
