The Department for Transport (DfT) sees innovation as key to tackling some of the challenges facing the transport sector today.

And as our new report finds, it has strengthened how it supports the use of new science and technology in the sector.

By 2030, DfT plans to spend around £1.1 billion on innovation activities including:

  • boosting the uptake of sustainable aviation fuel for greener flights

  • supporting infrastructure for zero emission HGV lorries

  • exploring how waste clay can be used to create more sustainable concrete for building transport infrastructure

But it must establish a clearer risk appetite to guide its investment decisions and provide better support to see innovative concepts through to widespread practical use.
