I think starting the compost pile in the corner near the shed makes the most sense because it gets partial shade there and stays moist enough without being too wet. We should layer brown materials like dried leaves and cardboard with green materials like kitchen scraps and grass clippings. The ratio of roughly three parts brown to one part green works best for decomposition. Turning the pile every couple of weeks helps aerate it and speeds up the process. We can use the finished compost for the raised beds in the spring. The soil in that area has been pretty depleted so adding organic matter will really help the vegetables thrive. I already have a good spot marked out for it and I can build a simple bin using wooden pallets if that works for everyone. Just let me know what you think about the location before I start setting things up.

The weather has been cooperating well lately so if we start this weekend we should have enough dry days to get the framework assembled. I have a spare pitchfork we can use for turning the pile and I can pick up some extra brown materials from the local landscaping supply place. They give away wood chips and shredded leaves for free if you bring your own containers. We should also think about adding a small amount of garden soil to introduce beneficial bacteria and speed up the initial breakdown process. Overall this project should be manageable within a few hours and the payoff for the garden will be substantial.

I was thinking of making a vegetarian lasagna for the potluck since several people mentioned they prefer plant based options. I have a recipe that uses roasted vegetables and a bechamel sauce that has always turned out well. I can also prepare a separate small dish without cheese for anyone who is dairy free. The lasagna needs to rest for about fifteen minutes after baking so I will bring it already cooked and just reheat it at the gathering. For dessert I might bring a fruit crisp using whatever seasonal fruit looks good at the market. Oat topping with a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg gives it a nice flavor without being too sweet. Let me know if you need me to bring anything else or if there are specific dietary needs I should account for.

Regarding the timing of the event I think arriving around 530pm would work well so we have time to set everything out before people start eating at 6. I can bring extra serving utensils and plates just in case. Also I have a large cooler we can use for drinks and salads that need to stay chilled. The forecast looks clear so we might be able to use the backyard if the group prefers that. I will check with you closer to the date to confirm the headcount so I can adjust the portions accordingly. Looking forward to it.
