From Black church editor Haleluya Hadero: Whenever I travel to Chicago, I drive past Gary, Indiana. Initially, I didn’t know much about Gary or its turbulent history. I knew the city was economically devastated and facing challenges, but as a recent transplant to the Midwest, I wanted to really understand Gary, especially since I live in nearby South Bend, Indiana. |

When Gary’s mayor, Eddie Melton, appeared in August on one of my favorite radio shows, my curiosity was piqued. He spoke about the city’s revitalization efforts and challenges to those efforts. I then read more about Melton’s work and the city’s history and realized there was a story I wanted to tell. |

Writers typically can’t put everything they’ve learned into stories. Interviews I did with a Baptist pastor in Gary and a girls-focused nonprofit didn’t make it into this piece. Nor did information from the time I spent at a soul food restaurant with Chuck Hughes, who runs the city’s Chamber of Commerce. I plan to follow Gary’s story in the coming years, and I hope you’ll follow along, too. |

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back. |
