| | | Hello. President Vladimir Putin's position on the Ukraine war is unwavering - but what is the view inside Russia? Steve Rosenberg has more. Meet the reality TV villain in the running to be LA mayor. And watch hailstones the size of golf balls rain down on a city. | | | | | | |
| TOP OF THE AGENDA | | Putin remains uncompromising on Ukraine, but is public discourse on war changing in Russia? | | | | | Putin insists Russia's war aims in Ukraine are being reached, even though initial plans were for a short military operation. Credit: Reuters | | After more than four years of Russia's war in Ukraine, what was meant to be a short-term "special military operation" has turned into a bloody war of attrition, Russia editor Steve Rosenberg writes. Russia has suffered huge battlefield losses, significant damage to its economy, technological decline, and increasing isolation on the world stage. And, the war is moving closer to home - with Ukrainian drones now reaching deep inside the motherland. But rather than seek a way to bring a stop to the war, Putin has displayed no intention of ceasing hostilities. Rather than scaling back, he's escalating, with recent large-scale Russian strikes launched on Ukrainian cities. Yet, Steve reports, inside the country "there are signs of a growing public discourse on whether it is time to end the war" - and there’s even evidence of this within Russia’s highly-controlled media. | | | | | | | - Crimea strike: Seven people have been killed and 11 others injured after a drone hit a bus in a Russia-controlled part of Ukraine, an official said.

| | | BEYOND THE HEADLINES | | He was a TV villain. Could he become mayor of one of the US's largest cities? | | | | | | | Pratt joined the cast of The Hills in 2007 as boyfriend of Heidi Montag, his now wife. Credit: Los Angeles Times via Getty Images | | The US is no stranger to TV stars going on to become politicians. The latest hopeful is Spencer Pratt, one of the villains of MTV's The Hills in the 2000s, who's in the running to be the next mayor of Los Angeles. Following Tuesday's primary vote, he could advance to the run-off election in November and face incumbent Karen Bass. Pratt's critics point out that his CV doesn't include stints in public office but appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and I'm a Celebrirty... Get Me Out of Here! So is he facing an uphill battle or could his position as a political outsider help him? | | | | | | |
