No images? Click here Dear Reader, Generative AI was really new just a few years ago. So new that there wasn’t a lot of research about it. Today, more than half of Americans say they have used AI to search for information. More than a quarter say they’ve used it for school or work projects. At the same time, eighty percent of Americans say they are very or somewhat concerned about AI. Now, one benefit of the rise of AI usage is leading to a growing body of research about the safety and effectiveness of the technology. Researchers are getting a clearer picture of how AI can be harmful and how it can be beneficial – and they’re clearing away the fog of hype to get a better sense of the technology’s capabilities and limitations. This is where The Conversation's unique form of journalism is so valuable. We bring you the perspective of those very researchers in their own words. My colleagues and I in The Conversation newsroom focus our coverage of AI on stories that help you understand how and why this technology is having such a profound effect on society. These stories are written by people who really know what they’re writing about, because they have spent a lot of time researching it. They have the knowledge and context to understand what’s happening – and they’re happy to share it with the public for the greater good. This kind of coverage isn’t easy to find – or to write. If you value this type of explanatory journalism that delivers firsthand knowledge and skilled analysis in clear, plain language, please consider supporting our work. You’ll be helping to give the public grounded, nuanced – and invaluable – information about the changes AI is bringing to our lives. We’ve gathered some of our most helpful articles into a downloadable e-book that we’ll be sending to all our donors, whether you give $5 or $500. We are grateful for your support as we close out our fiscal year. Thank you. Eric Smalley
