Last week, PW’s sixth annual U.S. Book Show convened some 700 publishing pros to discuss data-driven publishing, page-to-screen adaptations, and more. Wiley bought the U.K.-based Emerald Publishing for $452 million as part of its strategy to license more material to AI companies. Andrew Martin is wrapping up his two-decade tenure at St. Martin’s Publishing Group and will retire from his role as publisher-at-large next month. Macmillan tapped Brenna Connor, formerly Circana BookScan’s industry analyst, to join the publisher’s consumer insights team. The New York Times Book Review announced that editor Gilbert Cruz will depart to head up the paper’s “canon and signature lists.” And Gibbs Smith Education president and publisher Elizabeth Wallace and longtime distribution executive Gilbert Perlman died at 46 and 72, respectively.

The company said it sees the acquisition of the U.K.-based academic journal as not only deepening its presence in the journal market, but also increasing the amount of content it can license to AI companies. more
The publisher-at-large will depart after 20 years with the company, effective July 1. Martin helped grow SMPG’s Minotaur imprint as its publisher, and later served as executive publishing director of the group. more
Connor, who stepped down as director and industry analyst for Circana BookScan last month, starts at Macmillan Publishers on June 8 in the newly created role of senior director of consumer insights. more
