Volunteer Office Hours TODAY, June 16
Reminder that our next virtual office hours for volunteers is happening this afternoon from 3-4 pm EDT. Join us by registering for a Teams link for the meeting. By the People Office Hours are an open time for volunteers to hear program updates from Community Managers, ask questions about transcription, and share insights with each other. Today's meeting will include a discussion of the new By the People community forum, but discussion is open to all topics!
NEW Teddy Roosevelt Projects
Calling all "Ted heads"! We've added new projects of Presidential correspondence to our "Rough Rider to Bull Moose: Letters to Theodore Roosevelt" transcription campaign.
The two new projects include letters Roosevelt received in the months immediately before and after international developments that finally drew the U.S. into World War I in April 1917. T.R. lobbied for authorization to organize a division of volunteer soldiers, reminiscent of his Rough Riders of the Spanish-American War. Although fifty-eight years old, Roosevelt hoped to lead them into battle himself. The Wilson administration remained cool to the idea before declining his entreaties outright. T. R. ultimately did not go “over there” to fight on the front lines, but several members of his immediate family would serve in the ground forces, in the new air corps, or as medical support personnel.
Dig in to yet another fascinating period in the wild life of Theodore Roosevelt!
