Nicole Massie Martin, CT's President & CEO, grew up on stories of perseverance.
She listened to her parents talk about walking miles to school each morning in freezing cold Pittsburgh. They told Martin about her great-grandmother's work to integrate the local school system, and her grandfathers' service both in World War II and in the fight for equality at home.
"These stories were more than personal narratives passed down to my generation," writes Martin at CT. "Their inner resolve was a family heritage meant to teach, but it was more than that: Resilience was a central part of our shared Christian faith."
In "Faith Is Not a Sprint," Martin explores Bible passages that demonstrate how "perseverance is available to every believer." She encourages Christians to reflect on their own stories and to look back on the resilience of those who have gone before them.
Above all, she reminds readers, may we find that when we look to God as the source of our strength, we find resilience that sustains through the marathon of faith. |

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back. |
