| Good morning, Chicago. Immigration agents are less visible on Chicago streets than last fall, but today we get a reminder from Ald. Andre Vasquez that they are still present. Earlier this month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents crashed into a woman’s car in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood while arresting someone. Today in our section, Vasquez recounts the details of the chaotic crash, the arrest and the short Chicago police investigation that followed. Vasquez believes ICE agents’ actions that day warrant a longer and more thorough examination from CPD and perhaps even Cook County or state officials. The Tribune Editorial Board calls out Illinois public officials on two matters today. First, it writes about an aggressive challenge to Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez’s petitions to get on the ballot as an independent for Congress this fall. Sigcho-Lopez spoke to the board this week about his fight to stay on the ballot and also about the difficulties of running as a third-party candidate in Illinois. Read the whole piece below. Second, the board calls out leaders who were quick to comment on a burning cross in Grant Park by concluding it was a hate crime from the right, when actually things were not as they seemed. This week, a 21-year-old came forward claiming to have burned the cross in protest of the policies of President Donald Trump. Also today, the president of Grand Valley State University in Michigan writes about why Steve Wozniak’s speech about AI and humans got cheered instead of booed. Don’t miss more of our readers’ letters about their encounters with former President Barack Obama.
