Aussies fed up with sky-high costs and ballooning waitlists for aged care are moving to Thailand and Bali for resort-style living at a fraction of the price.
In Australia you could pay up to $137,000 a year for aged care, including $45,483 for just a room. But in Indonesia the total yearly cost is $44,250, including $19,950 for a two-bedroom villa with an outdoor kitchen. In Thailand it is even cheaper at $34,380 to stay at a luxury retirement resort. But there are downsides, including being separated from family and not having Australia's rigorous quality metrics or health care. There are also some serious legal hurdles.
