On an expedition to find whale sharks deep into the Gulf, 14 awaited us

After a four-hour boat ride, a mountain range of dorsal and tail fins rose from the sea. 

Scientists were nearly 100 miles offshore Southwest Florida, and in front of them now was the reason they traveled: 14 feeding whale sharks, a rare aggregation and the perfect opportunity for science. 

We joined the expedition.

Pinellas teenagers get a firsthand look at Gulf life

For years, a marine science camp available through USF St. Petersburg has given teenage girls an up-close look at marine life. The young women studied sea critters and the health of marine life in Tampa Bay — and even got a glimpse at some dolphins.
