Four minutes and 54 seconds was all it took Monday night for the Red Sox to find a new low in this three-month nightmare.
In a messy, whirlwind bottom of the ninth, Aroldis Chapman, perfect in save opportunities for nearly a year, proved imperfect. He threw eight pitches, faced four batters, allowed a hit to each, and gave up a walkoff, three-run triple to Jake McCarthy, dooming the Red Sox to a stunning 3-2 loss to the Rockies.
It was the first time all season that the Sox lost after leading at the end of seven innings. They had been 29-0 in those situations.
