Stacking Up
As the industry continues to adapt to the closure of Baker & Taylor, Ingram Library Services and Penguin Random House are partnering on a print-on-demand program designed to help keep popular backlist titles on library shelves, while used and new book e-retailer ThriftBooks has launched its own library fulfillment and preordering service. Trade revenue was up in April compared to the previous year, thanks in part to strong sales of children’s and YA books. Union Square has teamed with Reese Witherspoon’s Gen Z–focused media and lifestyle brand Sunnie on a publishing program kicking off this fall. Elle Kennedy’s hockey romance series Off Campus is enjoying a major sales boost following the success of Amazon’s recent TV adaptation. And we chatted with Pulitzer-winning novelist Andrew Sean Greer for the latest installment of our Pride Month interview series. In other news, a month-long review by the U.K.’s Commonwealth Foundation has determined that the winners of its short story prize, published in Granta, were not generated by AI, per the Independent. On Substack, authors Devon Halliday and Karin Gillespie discuss publishers’ preference for debut novels. Vogue has a first look at Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, and the trailer for Taika Waititi’s spin on Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun just dropped. The Guardian sits down with author Cory Doctorow to discuss the allure—and dangers—of AI. And novelist Shirley Lord has died at 93.
