Set during the 1930s as China is ravaged by civil war and Japanese invaders, Twin Lotuses, a new graphic novel by Chinese creator Xiaoyu, combines an epic love story between a Western-trained scientist and a beautiful actress/dancer with an operatic turn towards science fiction and tragedy. While traveling by sea to Yangtze, the two lovers are separated after the ship is bombed by the Japanese. Believing his lover has died, the despondent scientist creates a beautiful robot in her likeness and its dazzling performances convince audiences that she’s a real woman.

In this 9-page excerpt, a rowdy gang of street kids watch a theater performance from the surrounding rooftops until they hear a woman singing nearby. The little trouble makers follow the haunting sound planning to prank the singer only to make a discovery that will dramatically change their lives. Twin Lotuses by Xiaoyu, translated by Dan Christensen, is out now from Magnetic Press.

‘Love and Desire in the Promised Land: The Private Lives of Israelis and Palestinians’ by Salomé Parent-Rachdi and Deloupy, trans. from the French by Jenna Allen
The political is personal, revelatory, and tender in this work of graphic journalism, which offers a window into the love and sex lives of Israelis and Palestinians. The subjects—all interviewed before the attacks of Oct. 7, 2023—include a celebrity mixed couple, an ob-gyn who treats sexually naive Orthodox women, and a Ramallah woman who observes that “the occupation creeps into people’s private lives.” Deloupy’s fluid, collage-like comics depict the diversity of both humans and landscape; he takes poetic license at evocative moments, and in others turns out journalistic courtroom-style sketches. The result is both joyful and sobering. more

‘Escape’ by Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña
This gritty yet heartfelt WWII-era adventure from Remender (the Sacrificers series) and Acuña (the Black Panther series) pits a good guy soldier against the fascists of a foreign army. The twist? All the characters are anthropomorphic animals. The result recalls Joe Kubert’s DC war comics from the 1970s, and evokes a satisfying mix of Maus and Saving Private Ryan. more

‘Orlando: A Graphic Novel Biography’ by Virginia Woolf and Jules Scheele
Woolf’s groundbreaking 1927 novel receives a passionate and faithful reinterpretation by cartoonist Scheele (Queer). With vivid ligne claire reminiscent of a flamboyant Tintin and saturated colors, Scheele sensually relays the story of a beautiful Elizabethan nobleman’s development as a poet—and his sudden transformation into a woman. This transporting adaptation and homage is sure to impress those who know the novel deeply and kindle the interest of those who do not. more

‘Blink and You'll Miss It’ by Ethan S. Parker, Griffin Sheridan, and Keith Browning
A woman spirals into her past in this taut supernatural thriller scripted by Parker and Sheridan (coauthors of Kill Your Darlings) and drawn by newcomer artist Browning. Nearly 50 years after Jesse Harmon escaped Perennial Harbor, an eerily staid town dominated by an ominous cathedral, she returns to find it—and the person she came back for, Melody—in stasis. Ultimately, more mysteries are raised than solved. Nonetheless, fans of supernatural and psychological horror such as Locke & Key will revel in these unsettling visions. more

‘Billy Bat’ by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki, trans. from the Japanese by Kristi Iwashiro
The parallel histories of Japanese and American comics inform this crackerjack postmodern paranoia thriller from Urasawa and Nagasaki (the Pluto series). Urasawa is a master of twisty thrillers that skirt the edges of reality, and postwar Tokyo provides a memorable backdrop, a collection of slums and shantytowns rising into a city from the ashes of war. Urasawa fans have eagerly awaited this manga’s English publication for years. They won’t be disappointed. more
