Regarding the community garden layout, I think we should go with raised beds this time around. The soil in that area has never been great for root vegetables and building up from the ground level would give us better control over drainage and soil quality. I measured the plot yesterday and we have roughly 40 by 60 feet to work with. If we put in four beds that are 4 feet wide and 12 feet long each, we will have enough walking space between them for wheelbarrow access. The sunny side near the fence would be ideal for tomatoes and peppers while the shadier end can handle leafy greens and herbs. We should also consider adding a small compost bin in the back corner. Let me know what you think about the dimensions and whether you want to adjust the layout before I order the lumber. I can pick everything up on Saturday morning if we finalize the plan by Friday evening.

I also checked on the price of untreated cedar and it is reasonable for the size we are looking at. The hardware store down the street has a sale on raised bed corner brackets that would make assembly much sturdier. We could build the frames in the driveway and carry them into place once they are assembled.

Another thought we could add a drip irrigation system from a rain barrel. It would cut down on manual watering and the barrels are available through the city program at a discount. Let me know if you want me to look into that as well.

The neighborhood book exchange idea is coming together nicely. I spoke with the community center director and they are happy to host a small shelf in the lobby area. She suggested we keep it simple with just a take-one-leave-one arrangement to avoid too much administration. I think we should start with a mix of fiction and non-fiction to appeal to different readers. I have about thirty books I can contribute right away and a few neighbors have already said they would bring some over. We could set up a simple sign with guidelines and maybe a small notebook for people to jot down recommendations. The center is open from 8am to 8pm daily so access should be convenient for most people. If you have any books you want to donate just bring them by my place before Thursday and I will get them sorted and labeled over the weekend.

I also checked with the librarian about any restrictions and she said they just ask that books be in decent condition with no missing pages or excessive wear. She also mentioned they have a leftover display rack we could borrow which would make the shelf look more organized. I will stop by on Wednesday to take a look at it and send you a photo so we can decide if it works for our setup.

Let me know if you have any other ideas for promotion. I was thinking a small flyer at the grocery store bulletin board might help get the word out.
