TOP OF THE AGENDA | How deadly blaze tore through packed bar |
|
| | The tragic blaze has reinforced calls for authorities to strengthen fire safety standards. Credit: Reuters | An indie band was performing at a packed bar in Thailand's capital on Sunday night before a huge fire broke out, killing at least 27 people and leaving dozens more injured. Eyewitnesses said the blaze then spread rapidly, cutting power and engulfing the room with smoke. Footage posted online shows panicking bar-goers screaming as they fled, some with their clothes on fire. Preliminary investigations suggest the inferno could have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner, though no official cause has yet been given. It's not the first time a deadly bar fire has broken out in Thailand. |

Ships stop crossing Strait of Hormuz after overnight strikes |

Iran said it had retaliated with strikes on US bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain. While "it’s believed neither side wants to return to all-out war", our correspondent Barbara Plett Usher reports, "analysts say they are in a state of controlled escalation". |
