AI is changing what employers expect from you. As routine work becomes automated, your value will come from thinking across disciplines, using AI effectively, and redesigning how work gets done. Here are three capabilities to strengthen now.
Take on broader roles. Build expertise beyond your specialty. Learn how different parts of your work connect, and use AI tools to move from ideas to prototypes quickly. Focus more on strategy, business context, and end-to-end problem solving than routine execution.
Synthesize knowledge. Don’t rely on AI to make decisions for you. Bring together information from different sources, evaluate the quality of inputs, test assumptions, and challenge AI-generated outputs before acting on them.
Redesign workflows. Don’t simply add AI to your existing process. Identify which tasks AI should handle, where human judgment is still essential, and what new responsibilities—such as oversight and guardrails—you need to introduce. As work speeds up, simplify coordination and spend more time on high-impact decisions.
