THIS WEEK

Carolyn Morris-Collier

The other day, I met separately with two men who attend two different evangelical churches in my town. The conversations felt eerily similar. Both mentioned non-Christian friends who had recently grown interested in the faith, so we talked about books and small group meetings they could recommend. They were encouraged.

Yet in each conversation, as we shifted to the topic of church, I felt the spirit in the room subtly change. It wasn’t that their churches were uninviting to outsiders. To the contrary, unbelievers were more than welcome. It was the men themselves who felt increasingly restless in their own places of worship.

I’m seeing the need for the two sides of my life—contemplation and action—to integrate fully.

Did you know that nearly 75% of pastors report feeling emotionally exhausted at least some of the time? This statistic from Barna Research highlights a difficult part of life in ministry: discerning between denying yourself and neglecting yourself. If you need permission to look inward and find a healthier ministry-life balance again, pick up a copy of Rest Well, Lead Well by Mark Dance.

In these pages, you’ll find the support you need to build and maintain a balanced life, moving between meaningful work in ministry and the biblical mandate and beauty of Sabbath. Sabbath is more than just a "slowed down" day. It’s meant to bring us to a full stop for short periods so we can rest and refuel. Break the cycle of burnout in your life and learn to love your calling again — order your copy of Rest Well, Lead Well.
