Good afternoon. It’s Thursday, July 16.

In today's newsletter:

  • A committee of lawmakers advanced a new bill designed to support the Alaska LNG megaproject that applies the state’s corporate income tax to private oil and gas producers and transporters, but exempts the gas line project from that tax.

  • If developers of the proposed gas pipeline move forward with the project, they will ask Alaskans for something between a few hundred million and a billion and a half dollars.

  • Police have identified a man and woman found dead last month in a burned vehicle in East Anchorage and also confirmed that the remains of a dog were found with them.

Mid-July is when summer produce is in full swing. These are supposed to be our salad days. But suddenly, thanks to the nationwide outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness caused by a parasite that spreads via tainted produce, we’re afraid of what dangers may be lurking in the produce drawer. Here's how cyclosporiasis is ruining peak salad season.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast and rainy again today with a high near 60 degrees. Showers are likely again on Friday, and the forecast calls for rain through this weekend. Daytime highs will range from the high 50s to mid-60s for several days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
