Temperatures are poised to exceed 40.3C — in what would be the hottest day ever recorded in the UK.

The Mirror readers are divided in their opinion about the rising temperatures, with some arguing more must be done to tackle climate change. However, others are not worried about the extreme summer weather and say they enjoy the opportunities to holiday and have days out in this country. 

The current record is 40.3C, which happened during the scorching heatwave of July 2022. Forecasters say it is likely to become warmer than that this summer, following several heatwaves already since May. The East of England and the Southeast of England will be the hottest counties during the next scorcher, which experts say will happen at the start of August. 

The Met Office’s forecast for the rest of July says conditions are expected to be “warmest in the south”. It adds that temperatures could potentially become “very warm again by the start of August”.

But before the return of the sunshine, many regions will experience an unsettled spell. Low pressure will sweep eastwards across the UK during the weekend, and become heaviest across northern England. The Mirror lists the 22 areas expected to see heavy rain on Sunday in this piece. 

Note, though, hosepipe bans extended to millions of people could be rolled out even more extensively this summer, the country's drought monitoring group has said, as it warns several parts of the country are on the precipice of water shortages.

The National Drought Group has warned that parts of southern, central and eastern England are close to experiencing the same conditions as more than a dozen other areas across the country.
