A huge wildfire near Bordeaux in the south-west of France has created a "pyrocumulonimbus" - a giant fire thunderstorm fuelled by its own winds and lightning. Firefighters tackling it have warned of a "David versus Goliath scenario" as they battle to bring the blaze under control. A heatwave with temperatures of 40C (104C) forecast in the coming days could further complicate efforts to tackle it. Fires are also burning across Spain, where 105,000 people have been evacuated from fire-hit areas in Valencia and the regions around Madrid and Ávila.

Three people have been killed and a two-year-old boy is among several others injured following a shooting that took place at a food festival near the Space Needle in Seattle on Sunday, the city's fire department has said. Authorities said one suspect is in custody while another fled the scene and has not yet been caught. Assistant chief of Seattle Police Tyrone Davis said it was thought the two suspects were shooting at each other.
