After one woman ended her relationship with her boyfriend, her TikTok feed was full of breakup content. Several weeks later, she was ready to move on, but her algorithm wouldn’t let her.

“I’m like, Please, I don’t want to see this anymore because it’s making me stay in that depressive state,” she said. “I didn’t want to feel sad anymore.”

As social media companies face increased scrutiny over addictive content, mental health experts are pointing to the platforms’ handling of breakup content as an example of how they fail to protect users.
