The one thing I wish somebody had told me the day I picked up a guitar.
I’ve been playing more than 20 years, and I learned this way too late.
Music stands on three pillars... melody, rhythm, and harmony.
And the guitar leans hard on melody.
It loves scales...
It loves solos...
It loves chords.
So that’s where your practice time goes.
Now here’s the thing nobody told me...
The best guitar players in the world all have a strong sense of rhythm.
And I don’t mean rhythm guitar.
Not strumming chords while somebody else takes the solo.
I mean applying rhythm to everything you play... your leads, your solos, even your scales.
Watch one of the greats sitting alone, just noodling through the pentatonic...
They’re playing to a beat you can’t hear.
But you know it’s there.
Now think back to the first scale you ever learned.
Probably the A minor pentatonic, same as me.
And chances are you still play it the exact same way you did back then...
Up and down, up and down.
It sounds like an exercise, because that’s all it is.
I wish somebody had been sitting there on day one to tell me...
“Eddie, if you keep playing that scale that way, you’re never going to make music with it.”
Nobody did.
And that up-and-down trap is an epidemic among guitar players.
So in today’s lesson I take that same A minor pentatonic and put rhythm on it.
Same notes...
Same shape you could play in your sleep...
Completely different sound.
Instead of walking the scale, you’re playing little phrases you can mix and match.
Musical sentences, one after another.
And the scale stops sounding mechanical and starts sounding like music.
This means the next time you sit down to run your scales...
You’re not practicing anymore.
You’re playing.
And this is what that gets you...
Every scale you pick up from here comes out better and cooler than the one before it.
It builds your internal clock, too.
No metronome, no click track, not even tapping your foot.
It took me five or six years to realize how important that was.
