Here is how you make simple chords sound sophisticated: change the note in the bass.

A slash chord just means a normal chord with a different bass note. D/F# is a D with F# in the bass. Play G, then D/F#, then Em, and listen to the bass walk down a smooth staircase, G to F# to E, while your chord hand stays easy. (Acoustia is full of these.)
