Birdy's Backyard: The organiser of Birdy's Backyard Ultra says wild weather didn't stop competitors from showing up to the annual endurance race. The event has runners complete a 6.71km course, on the hour, every hour. More than 100 runners descended on West Arthur at the weekend for an event which doesn't end until the last person drops. Edwyn Swain took out the men's category, completing 42 laps (282km) while Dionette Sakova led the women's event with 38 laps (255km).

Wintery blast hits Great Southern: The Great Southern shivered through last weekend's cold front, with freezing temps, strong winds and hail hitting the region. DFES confirmed 18 requests for assistance were received across the metropolitan and south west after Saturday's storm, mainly for minor roof damage and fallen trees. A tree was reported to have fallen across the Albany Highway near Lumeah on Saturday. Snow flurries were reported at the peak of Bluff Knoll at about 9am on Saturday while another front passed through on Monday, bringing similar conditions and snow flurries to the Stirling Range.
Albany meth bust: Two Albany men have been charged with drug and traffic offences after police allegedly seized about 259 grams of methylamphetamine near Armadale on Saturday night. Police alleged the men, who were travelling together failed to stop when directed, sped through a red light and crashed into a fence. Police said one man was seen trying to dispose of methylamphetamine, while more drugs were found in the vehicle. Both are due in Armadale Magistrates Court on September 2.
Illegal dumping: Albany residents have expressed outrage over images of significant litter on the South Coast Highway. Resident Rhedyn Dekker found the rubbish, which looked to be parts of a boat, office chair and a mattress. She called for residents to be more environmentally conscious.
