STOCK IN THE HEADLINES: ALIBABA GROUP HOLDING LIMITED

Alibaba (BABA), one of China's largest e-commerce and technology companies, was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Hangzhou, China. The company began as an online commerce platform and has since expanded into retail, cloud computing, logistics, digital services, and artificial intelligence. Its core platforms include Taobao, Tmall, and Alibaba.com, with Alibaba Cloud emerging as its newest powerhouse.

  • Cloud Growth Focus: External cloud revenue grew roughly 40% last quarter, driven increasingly by AI-related products. Alibaba is expanding data centers and compute capacity while driving enterprise adoption of its Qwen models.

  • AI Strategy and Monetization: Alibaba recently launched advanced versions of its Qwen model family, aiming to expand monetization through paid enterprise services and corporate products.

  • Domestic E-Commerce: E-commerce in China remains central to total results. Investments in quick commerce, delivery logistics, and shopping experience upgrades on Taobao and Tmall are costly and weigh on profit margins.

  • Profitability and Cash Flow: Divergence between revenue growth and profitability remains a concern. Alibaba has missed profit estimates for several consecutive quarters due to heavy capital spending across cloud, AI, and quick-commerce initiatives.
